The Curl Down

I’ve always prided myself on the fact that I can shower, get dressed, do hair & makeup, and be out the door in 20 minutes flat. I never said I looked GOOD doing it that way, but that was my routine because I adore sleeping in and it was always much more important to me than a long, hot shower and cute hair and makeup.

That all changed for me last week when Amy over at Chapters posted a vlog about the “curl down” method of curling your hair.

Um, yeah, did I mention that I’m 28 and that I apparently have NEVER KNOWN how to properly curl my hair?

I knew how to “tip the ends under” and I can flat iron like a pro, but I have always been jealous of those girls with the long, wavy locks. I have super fine hair (and it’s not that thick either) and I was convinced that my hair just couldn’t do that.

However, I stand corrected. And addicted. And obsessed. I’ve curled my hair more in the last week than I have in the two years since our wedding…perhaps for the first times SINCE our wedding 2 years ago, and I don’t really count that b/c the hairstylist did it!

To be honest, if I spray the SHIT out of it with hairspray, it will always still lose the majority of the curl, BUT, I still can’t get enough of it. I curled it to go to work last week…
I curled it to go to the rooftop bar for drinks with my girlfriend…
I curled it for our housewarming party last weekend…
I curled it today for work JUST BECAUSE (???!!)…

HELP!!!! I’m going to become one of those girls that takes HOURS to get ready in the morning (or at least an extra 15 minutes), and I don’t know if I can stand it!!

But then again, if somebody could only give me a lesson in makeup application, I’d be all grown up and shit…

  1. My hair goes STRAIGHT into a ponytail when I get out of a shower. Yeah, I know that's bad and all, but whatever, it's out of my face while I'm in the lab. Also, makeup for me includes tinted moisturizer, eyeliner, and mascara. So I'm no help to you there either. You sure are pretty though!

  2. LOL, thanks Ann. Honestly, I use moisturizer w/SPF, concealer, and mascara on a daily basis. Everything else is optional. Maybe I'll learn some day. 🙂

  3. Ha, well of course the SPF. Can't forget the SPF (that's in my moisturizer, concealer, and mineral powder….I left that out earlier….whatever, 5 mins for makeup, works for me). No face cancer!

  4. I know nothing about doing hair. Or makeup. My mom was never super girl-y and therefore taught me none of those things. Perhaps I am better off infertile. Otherwise, I'd probably end up with a girl to whom I could teach nothing about all of these things!

  5. As an ex-Mary Kay lady….don't make me explain where that phase came from, I can surely teach you how to put on the makeup, but I rarely, if ever, wear it. As for being girlie with the hair curling, extra points for you. It looks cute.

  6. Looks great! I've never known how to do it either and I'm running over to her vlog right now to learn!!!

  7. I love it! I have really thick hair so when it was longer it took forever to dry, straighten, and then curl, so most days I went straight. I love a little variety though – I'll have to check out the vlog.

  8. @Katie – that just made me burst out laughing! I never thought of bad hair/makeup skills as a benefit for why I shouldn't have a little girl someday. 🙂 @Natalie – Mary Kay!!! LOL. My cousin & BFF are both Mary Kay ladies, and thus far, I'm still no good at it, even with their best efforts. @Kelly & Steph – check it out! If nothing else, their accents crack me up (tho I guess if you're from the south, you'll think it's normal).

  9. Your hair looks so pretty when it's curled….but it always looks good, you are one of those lucky ones that can not have to curl & it looks good! My hair also does not stay curled for ANYTHING! Me personally….I cut 17 inches off my hair this spring b/c I just didn't have the time anymore to blow dry and flat iron (my hair is naturally wavy, so if I want it straight & not frizzy, I have the maintenance to go with it). I tend to get into lazy moods where I wash at night & then in the morning spritz with curl enhancing spray…the natural look, but I tend to refer to it as "I'm too lazy to dry & straighten my hair look."

  10. I like it! As for the makeup, I figure that's for older ladies, so let's just not think about it for a while 🙂

  11. So cute! I love your wedding picture with the mountain in the background–just gorgeous.I think that dealing with IF, more than ever I want to look HOT, damn it! So I totally get putting in the effort.

  12. How did I never know this? HOW? I feel like I just found the holy grail of hair. Seriously. My hair is naturally curly, but needs help to look cute and I have NEVER succeeded in curling it.This is amazing. Just amazing.I can't help you with make-up. It is flammable and therefore not allowed in kitchens. I went out last night and it took me 20 minutes to even find my makeup. I win the pathetic award! 🙂

  13. I wanted to let you know I looked at that vlog and that's actually how I curl my hair too (when I do it). But there is also a variation that you can do – don't curl all of it that way, just curl sections and leave some sections straight. It looks really cute and it's more of a "natural look."

  14. Yeah, that's how the one girl said she does her hair, but that only really works if your hair is naturally wavy or curly kind of. It'd just look goofy with me for me to have curly parts and stick straight parts!

  15. I wish I could get my hair to curl easily – I have SO MUCH hair it takes forever to curl. 99.99% of the time I keep it straight because it's easier. But I would LOOOOVE to have some movement…

  16. Your hair looks awesome!!! I am jealous. I will be clicking on the link and try to get a lesson!!

  17. You look great with curled hair, but of course your beautiful to begin with.

  18. You look great with curly hair…you look beautiful either way though. 🙂 Love the wedding pictures. And of course now I'm curious how you curled your hair. I would love to try to curl my hair but am scared I don't know how! 🙂

  19. Tried this over the weekend, a lot easier than I thought! Thanks for the recommendation. It looks great on you!
