Insurance Hell

I hate the I have to pay money to conceive a child.
I hate the money we’ve already spent on this journey.
I hate that a major deal at work for me just fell through and that it means we have much less in our pocketbook to pay the bills with.
I hate that I just got a letter in the mail from Assurant Health stating that our premiums are going up 32 F*ING PERCENT next month.
I hate that said insurance doesn’t even cover infertility. No diagnostic work. Nothing.

How is that even justifiable???

I don’t know what to do.

Should I drop the coverage we have right now ($2k deductible, 70% covered after that to $9,500 + a maternity rider [with its own deductible of course]) and just get major medical? Since IF isn’t even covered and I’ve debated having a home birth anyway, this is what I’m starting to think might make more sense financially. I don’t know. I just don’t know.

  1. I HATE it all too! Good luck deciding on what to do!

  2. It just plain sucks. No other words for it.

  3. Oh hunny, I don't know either. Big hugs coming from my way.

  4. Yep…it sucks…all of it. Not sure what to tell ya though. 🙁

  5. Oh. Em. Gee. I JUST got off the phone with my insurance company AND the flex spending people, neither of whom know their ass from a hole in the ground!! I HATE insurance companies, they want to fight you to cover stuff that they're supposed to pay for!!! No matter what you do or what plan you go with, they'll find a way to f*ck you. I hate insurance companies.

  6. Gah!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! SO sorry you have to deal with this sh*t on top of IF!!

  7. Just finished talking to my insurance agent – he knows a way we can finagle the system and drop my maternity rider for now…then when I get preggo, get me denied for a pre-existing condition and then automatically accepted by the state program. Um, WHY THE FUCK didn't you tell me this 2 years ago??? We've been paying an extra $183/mo maternity rider for 24 months – that's $4,392 UNNECESSARY DOLLARS in 2 yrs! Now he's telling me we can save that money every month, and when I'm preggo, my new plan will be $290/month for guaranteed maternity coverage, and then after I deliver, I can drop that and go back on my Assurant. Geez…wish they would have told me this 2 years ago.

  8. Oh Im so sorry you are having to deal with all of that! I am sort of in the same boat with you……luckily my husbands job has pretty good insurance that covers some infertility stuff, BUT it is still so expensive for everything! I have had so many tests and ultrasounds lately that the bills just keep adding up!

  9. Ugh I hate insurance companies. They should all burn. I hope you find the decision that is right for you! Good luck Josey.

  10. Thanks everyone. It's just so frustrating b/c my husband and I both work for small companies (under 3 employees) so there is NO health insurance provided and it's just SO dang expensive to buy on your own. UGH.

  11. Tough decisions when nothing you are paying for is covered by the insurance you are paying for(?). Health Insurance is so confusing and so unfair and so blatantly discriminatory. I'm sorry you are having to fight this right now.

  12. It is ridiculous that you have to jump through these hoops! It does sound like the new plan your agent proposed is a good one… but yeah, did he just think of it? Gah. I don't know if you've already looked into something like this, but I had coverage at one point through a small business association or something like that so I got relatively good group rates, and I only had to pay a small amount to become a member… let me know if you'd like me to go in my files and find out more about it (it was about five years ago when we were in the throes of primary IF so I don't remember the details anymore).

  13. I am sorry, insurance is SOOO frustrating. We just got an HSA, Health Savings Account. It has good things and bad things with it…like all insurance I guess. I also am paying for short term disability so when I do get pregnant I will have some money coming in as my office does not offer any paid maternity leave.I hope you are able to get something figured out. The last thing you need is just one more frustration 🙁

  14. I am sorry you are dealing with this sweetie. I hate insurance too. This week it came up that healthcare costs for companies is going to double. So I am kind of nervous that it soon might be unobtainable for us to have insurance. Check and see if you can get an HSA. That might be more affordable and you can spend the money anyway you choose. They have higher deductibles, but if you can save the money you save in monthly payments you might have enough to cover the deductible.

  15. My work refuses to do the money withdrawal to put pre-tax income into an HSA for me. Have I mentioned I hate my job?I do have an HSA, but it's post-tax dollars and I'm feeling like it's more trouble & confusion than it's worth. I don't know…

  16. I've been fighting with an organization that was refusing to allow my mom to receive treatment with a free drug from the drug company. They refused to allow the company to send them the drug because then they couldn't buy it and jack up the price to her. I'm really starting to look at the health care system in a new light.
