Rainbow Brite, Say What?!

So here’s how my brain works lately…
I asked for recommendations on prenatals in this post and Natalie says, “My midwife had me change my prenatals to Rainbow Lite Prenatals.”
I immediately think WOW, I LOVED RAINBOW BRITE. If I have a daughter, her room is going to be a Rainbow Brite theme.
So instead of researching cheap places to buy Rainbow Lite Prenatals, I start googling Rainbow Brite.
Here’s the Rainbow Brite (and Starlite and Sprite!) that I loved.

Cute, right? I love Sprite’s oversized chin and happy countenance. I love Rainbow Brite’s cute little girl body and funny rainbow arm & leg rolls – and don’t you even get me started on that belt. I LOVED that belt as a child. Finally, Starlite. I mean, c’mon. She’s sweet lookin’, isn’t she? Not quite ROY G. BIV, but close.

Oh, but THEN, then you keep looking through the google images, and you realize THEY FRICKIN BARBIEFIED RAINBOW BRITE!

WTH?

This is NOT the Rainbow Brite I know and love. Sprite’s cute oversized chin is gone and he’s all symmetrical looking. Rainbow Brite has a tiny waist and appendages (way to give little girls complexes), and Starlite has purple in her hair, and not even in ROY G. BIV order. When did she get that bottle of dye? Finally, who the hell is the dog? Did I forget about a dog in the original?

I’m sad. I want to go back to the good ole’ days. Damn you America for Barbiefying my childhood loves.

  1. NOT COOL!

  2. Thanks for bringing me back to the good ol' days! The room my sister and I shared when I was little had a Rainbow Brite mural painted on the wall by my mother. To this day, Rainbow Brite reminds me of innocence…but this new "Barbie" version upsets me too. Booooo!

  3. haha I love you. That is all.

  4. So, I have a Rainbow Brite circa 1985 poster…it has all the little dolls posed cutely on a rainbow, surrounded by greenery and such. It was my cousin's, and a few years ago I had it mounted on yellow posterboard and framed in a cute white frame. It used to hang in our bathroom, but we don't really have a place for it at the new apartment yet. It's pretty rad though…And boo on the new Rainbow Brite. I hate when they "modernize" things by sexing them up.

  5. Oh, SO NOT COOL!!!! It's like every single toy has to meet society's standards of the "perfect woman." Even cutie pie Rainbow Brite! I had RB sheets and bedspread up until high school (no joke!). 🙂

  6. SAY IT ISN'T SO!!Barbie Rainbow Bright is not allowed. I loved the original too! I had the doll and lunchbox and everything! ::runs from blog to kick Barbie Rainbow Bright in the shins::

  7. That's messed up!!!

  8. I rocked out some serious Rainbow Brite high tops when I was in elementary school. I still have the shoe box from them but not the shoes. Wouldn't have be a great item to pass down to a future child. They would probably love and hate me for keeping them! 🙂 ha!Can't believe that last picture.

  9. I loooooved my Rainbow Brite doll! When I saw the first picture I was all, awwwww I remember my Rainbow Brite and then I saw the second picture and I was like, the FUCK! Looking all anime and shit! That makes me mad!Why do people want to mess up stuff that is perfectly fine just the way it is! Gah!

  10. I had a Rainbow Brite birthday cake one year, but I actually have no memory of watching her. They did the same thing to Strawberry Shortcake. She's skinnier and I believe they got rid of the freckles as well. Nothing good.

  11. Everything is barbie-fied these days. Sad. 🙁 I want to go back to the classics!http://bringingyoumorethanasong.blogspot.com/

  12. Whoa. You're so right. They totally barbified Rainbow Brite. So sad.

  13. Hahaha I love that my prenatal recommendation sent you on a bunny trail. Boo for the new Rainbow Bright. Everything has gotten too grown-up since we were little. It is amazing when you walk through a toy aisle and realize what has happened.

  14. i used to love rainbow brite. it is sickening what they did to her. my kid if i have one will see the original!

  15. OH HELLS NO!!!Loved RB too as a kid. I was her for Halloween like, 6 times. Going to youtube some episodes now…

  16. Oh, that is horrible. Come on….there was nothing wrong with the old Rainbow Brite. There is no need for a sexy rainbow brite!
