Old Habits Die Hard

I had to laugh at myself this morning while I was eating breakfast. Please tell me I’m not alone in my idiosyncrasy. 🙂

To explain this story, I’ve been trying to cut back on cheese lately because of my…*ahem*…digestive issues. So far it’s not helping worth a damn, I just miss my cheese, but I figure it’s worth a shot. At any rate, I decided that I needed to try to up my calcium intake, so this morning I ate a bowl of Li.fe cereal with milk for breakfast.

The problem with this idea is that I have *always hated milk, and as far as I can remember, I have never eaten a bowl of cereal without tipping the milk out of the bottom of the spoon before eating the bite of cereal. Never. I’m a pretty boring cereal eater… Li.fe & Cheer.ios were the allowed cereals in my house as a child, and I’ve pretty much stuck with them my entire life… but it’s odd to me to realize that though I like the little bit of sogginess & moisture in the cereal from the milk, I have never actually locked my lips around the spoon and eaten the milk with the bite. Here’s my protocol:

1) Scoop up a bite of cereal.
2) Hold spoon against side of bowl, tip out as much milk as possible.
3) Eat bite of cereal by scraping teeth along spoon (you know, in order to get the cereal, but avoid any trace amounts of milk left in the concave bottom of the spoon.
4) Repeat.

Shit, I’m kind of weird. I admit it. 🙂

That being said, this morning I challenged myself to eat super slowly (thereby allowing more milk to soak into the cereal itself), and I made myself eat the milk out of the spoon. I didn’t necessarily like it, but at least it wasn’t awful like I remember. By repeating these two steps, I ingested every ounce of milk in that bowl.

The things I’m doing already for this child… hahaha.

*Well, as long as I can remember I’ve hated milk. In elementary school, we had to drink 1/2 our milk carton before we could empty our trays, so I’d always sneakily pour 1/3 of my milk into two of my friend’s empty milk cartons while the lunchroom aides weren’t looking. Voila -problem solved! That was probably the closest I got to being a problem child back in those days. LOL

  1. That's hilarious! Have you even tried almond milk? I started drinking that a few months ago, and now prefer it over milk…and it has a lot of calcium too!

  2. I drank a lot of chocolate milk when I was pregnant. I was used to having a glass of wine after dinner every night, so the chocolate milk was my substitute "dessert". You probably don't like chocolate milk if you hate milk that much though 🙁

  3. OH MY GOSH!!!! We are soul sisters! Ever since I could remember, I would tip my spoon to let as much milk out as possible. I HATED the milk. Still to this day. My husband watches me eat and can't stand how much I waste milk, because there is literally as much left in the bowl as when I first poured (I don't allow for it to soak into the cereal). I'm so happy to hear I'm not the only one who does this!!!!! 🙂

  4. This.is.me. We are soulmates. I think I remember trying water in my cereal instead of milk as a kid for the moisture affect…it's not the same. Don't try it.

  5. LOL – this made me laugh out loud for real.I'm totally opposite. I LOVE milk. And while TTC my ND had me stop having dairy and I SORELY missed my tall glass of milk with dinner every night. I pour EXTRA milk with my cereal.I agree with Amanda though – almond milk is pretty darn good!

  6. HAHA-Im the exact same way! I will do everything possible to NOT get milk on my spoon. I will only drink the milk if its with frosted flakes or the end of the box and the milk is sugary(is that a word?!) lol. I dont recommend eating frosted mini-wheats,they are my FAV but I literally squeez the milk out before every bite-my hubby hates when I do it! lol. 🙂

  7. I'm with Andrea, I *love* my milk. If I were stuck on a desert island and could only choose one beverage, it would be milk. I'm guessing yours would be beer 😉

  8. sneaky lunch room antics. Love it! Dude I had to basically choke down cottage cheese at first. My breakfast consisted of 4 parts pineapple to 1 part cottage cheese. But after a few months i got used to it. And it is like super calcium loaded so good for you and baby. As for not liking milk, yeah you're weird. I can't believed you were spoiled and got Li.fe cereal. We only got cheerios. That was it. Cheerios or nothin'. hahaha.

  9. I loathe milk…I remember as a kid being forced to drink it by my mean aunt and always hated it…I know it's healthy and all, but I can't do it. At least you got the milk down though..good for you!
