C25K…The Gift of Good Health

I’ve just learned that “C25K” is the runner’s lingo for a couch to 5k running program. Basically, this is a training schedule that allows for someone who has never found running to be easy to “become” a runner.

One Day posted the other day about how she is doing a C25k program to help get back into shape post twins, and it totally inspired me to try to do the same. Last time I was a “runner” was 10 years ago when I was a junior in college and I was in the best shape of my adult life (and weighed in at about 145#). I ended up having to quit because of knee issues, so I’m hoping that has healed itself over the past decade and I can do this. I have my awesome jogging stroller that I bought last June, so the plan is to go running with Stella and have that be one of her nap times for the time being.

Ann (wow, you’re going by Ann now?) – how did you pick a lifting program to do in conjunction with your running training in order to best strengthen and protect your knees? I’ll need to modify it to something I can do at home with light weights and body resistance, but I know I need to do something!

I found an awesome podcast to help keep me motivated during the training runs, and the plan is to take as long as I need, but still be trying to stick to the 8 week schedule as closely as I can. I’m a little nervous about running at high altitude, with a stroller, with exercise induced asthma, in the cold winter of Colorado, but I know that I can do this! Between this C25k program, getting back into hot yoga, doing some weight training, breastfeeding, and eating right, the goal is to be down 19# in the next 19 weeks. Wish me luck!

Happy 30th Birthday to me. 🙂

  1. I want to start the C25K program after I go for my 6 week check also. I have a treadmill so I can't use the weather as an excuse! Best of luck to you!

  2. Good luck!! and Happy 30th Birthday! Hope you have a great one.

  3. The C25K plan was how I started running! I love it and think it's a great plan for getting into shape.

  4. Happy birthday!!

  5. Happy birthday Josey!

  6. Haha, I changed it a while back. I was getting annoyed with the Bradshaw thing. 😀 New blog layout, new user name, man, how do you even recognize me?!I'll tell you what. I will write a whole post on fitness and running and lifting and all that jazz. I've been meaning to for quite some time now, but you're giving me a reason to. If I can get my shit together, I'll put it up this afternoon.Happy happy birthday and lots of love, my friend! And snuggles to Miss Stella too.

  7. good luck on the C25k! I think if you find something to cover your mouth with when you run outside it will help to keep the asthma away. It worked for me anyway.

  8. For the first 3 months after Mac anytime I exercised I peed my pants, I recommend wearing a pad if you're really going to start so soon! happy 3-0!

  9. I love this idea. I just wish it was warmer here. You sound so motivated…I love it!BTW – You are the cutest 30 year old around sister.

  10. My friend is trying to convince me to run a 5K at Disney with her next year. This program might be just the thing to actually allow me to be in shape for it! I hate running! But I'm also trying to get into bikini shape. I don't want to actually wear a bikini but I want to have the body that I COULD if I wanted to!I hope you'll give us updates as you go through it!And a VERY happy birthday to you! (It's my 30th this year too. When did we get old enough to be 30??)

  11. You can do it Josey. I was never a runner and just decided to run a half marathon last August. You are motivated enough that I know you can do it! Happy birthday:)

  12. You can do it Jo! So it's been FOREVER since I've posted on your blog and I've only recently (the last couple of months) caught up on reading your posts…I've been terrible at keeping up….just as bad as NOT posting my thoughts to my own blog…(must get back into that, it's so therapeautic!). Anywho….Julie did the C25K last summer…she LOVED the program and it helped her so much to get into running. I also have exercise induced asthma and started running again this last summer (down the county road past the south elevator) and LOVED every moment of it so much that I bought myself a used treadmill this winter so I could run when the girls are home/in the winter. 🙂 Good luck!

  13. You go, mama! I have heard great things about the C25K program. Also, thought I'd mention that my husband, who has struggled with knee issues for years, has recently gotten into the "Chi Running" method and it seems to have helped. Good luck!
