The Monday Snapshot – Nursing Babies Edition

This week’s memorable moment for me happened yesterday when my friend’s daughter sat down on the couch next to me. I was nursing Stella, and just like all weekend, Aurora (who will be 3 in December) asked me if I was feeding milk to baby Stella. Yes, I am! I cheerily replied. Well, Aurora then decided that she should feed her baby as well. She proceeded to climb onto the couch next to me, lift up her shirt, very carefully place her doll’s mouth on her nipple, and then snuggled her in tight to “give her milk” as well. My heart just melted.

Giving milk to her baby… (picture used with permission of her Mommy)

Toddlers can be difficult, concepts like sharing are hard to teach, and sometimes I get overwhelmed at the thought of corralling two kids, but MAN do I hope and pray that I get to experience raising two children and that Stella gets to experience having a sibling to quarrel with, but most of all to love. My thoughts and prayers are with you as well, E. Aurora would be a great big sister.

Beyond adorable! I love my my daughter nurses her babies.

  2. That is adorable 🙂

  3. This is adorable!! I know many dollies come with bottles to ‘feed’ them milk… which is fine, but only teaches one way of feeding babies so it is nice that you could have this influence on her! 🙂

    1. Yep, she has one of those dolls with a bottle as well, but I love that she can feed her baby either way! 🙂

  4. Very sweet! Thanks for sharing!

  5. Isn’t that just the sweetest thing!

  6. So sweet! Love this!

  7. Oh, dear, she is so sweet. 🙂

  8. I loooove this!

My niece (who was 4 when L was a lil one) did this when I was nursing L at their house, and my BIL asked me to no longer nurse in front of her! So glad your friends are cool and supportive of BFing!

    1. Ugh, that would SO piss me off. It’s so natural and normal – why should a 4yo not get to see that? Sad…

  9. First – this is absolutely adorable!
Second – the desire for siblings for our little ones is one that I am really struggling with – what you say is so true – I want for her to have not only someone to quarrel with, but a playmate and someone to love and share a common life with.
Praying you get to have the joy of raising two children as well!

  10. I remember doing this with my baby dolls as a little girl! I saw this photo in my reader and my heart melted without even reading your post. So sweet!

Stells will be a big sister – I really believe that!

  11. So sweet! I love the positive image that this little girl has and how breastfeeding is just part of being a mommy to her dolls (like changing them or giving them a bottle).

And, I, too, so hope for our girls to have siblings (and secretly I really hope for Sofia to have a SISTER). There is nothing like them.

    1. Agreed – I not-so-secretly hope for Stells to have a sister as well. 🙂 We shall see.

  12. So lovely. 🙂

  13. Ohhhh! Heart-meltingly sweet. I love this.

  14. Monkey see, monkey so! Adorable.

I never thought about the toy babies with bottles until Fiona mentioned it upthread. I think it would be awesome if my *son* copied me like this, just so I can teach him that this is the way a mama can feed her baby. (And then the “Why not Daddy?” questions can begin and BJB can take it away! LOL).
