Weekly Wednesday Weigh-In: 5 Weeks Postpartum

4 weeks ago at 163#, I posted with some grand aspirations of being healthy and active through the holidays while using MFP to keep myself accountable and lose some weight before my sister’s wedding. Well, I pretty much sucked ass at that. Actually, I did great the first week, but for the last three weeks I’ve done nothing but overindulge in food and drink.

SO. Here we are, in the new year, and I am WAYYYY not happy with myself. I was a bloated 168# this morning – that’s about the same as when I was 20 weeks pregnant. I looked and felt great then. Not so much now. A year ago this week I was 4w post-partum and weighed 163# (and I ended up getting as low as 155.5# at 13w pp) if that gives you any idea of how annoyed I am with myself right now.

Yesterday I was getting ready for work, and I pulled out some size 10 Express dress pants that used to fit me fine (and yes, these are a decade old – I need to buy new clothes someday). This is what I saw.

IMAG3952Ya, not cool. I can still fake it like a pregnant lady trying to hide a bump, but it’s not pretty. I’m literally busting at the seams in my belly and thighs.

I’m sure most of you are tired of reading about my ups and downs in this regard, but I have to keep fighting and keep working at this, because I really do feel SO MUCH BETTER about everything in my life when I’m at a healthier weight and treating my body well.

A few things I’m changing around the house for awhile to help myself get back into the healthy living lifestyle:

  • No more beer in the fridge during the week (this is much easier to stick to in the winter!)
    • I’ll buy it for the weekend and that’s it. If it’s not around, I won’t drink it.
  • No more blocks of cheese in the fridge unless I buy it specifically for a recipe.
    • Lately I’ve been bad at the whole portion control thing, so until I can get back in a healthy routine, trigger foods needs to be out of my house.
  • No more blogging at night after dinner if I haven’t worked out yet.
    • I have GOT to get off my ass and move more if this is going to work, and since I spend all day sitting on it at work, I need to at least make this a priority over the computer.

I WILL:

  • Record my favorite TV shows upstairs so I have to use the elliptical (that’s in our bedroom) in order to watch them!
  • Buy lots of fruits and veggies, b/c I’m too cheap to throw them out and it will ensure I snack on them before they go bad!
  • Eat more of what I’m feeding my daughter, since I already make sure that she gets healthy, balanced meals every day!

So there ya go… I hoping to post a MUCH better picture of myself in those pants before too long. 🙂

*ETA – I totally forgot to post a link to this website. I came across it yesterday via my friend’s Mom, and it was incredibly interesting.

  1. I forgot to switch my weight to pounds, and it gave me a BMI of FIFTY-SIX! Talk about giving a girl a heart attack. Thankfully I switched it back and I’m at 25. PHEW.

It’s interesting that we’re only one BMI point apart but our other demographics put us in different countries. Mine placed me in the Dominican Republic (Hi, Fiona!).

For full disclosure, I am 5’6″ and 157 pounds. My goal weight is 150. If I could ever see the scale start with “14x.x” again I would just float away on a cloud of happiness.

    1. Hahaha – I did the same thing! WTF?! 🙂

I’m usually in the 155# range, and when I’m a toned 150-155# I feel awesome. 140s I would nearly die of happiness, but then I wouldn’t have beer and cheese in my life at all, and that’s just not going to happen. 🙂

  2. I feel your pain!!! I do really well for a while and then randomly fall off the wagon. Here’s to a 2013 of good health and non-pudgy bellies. 🙂

  3. Good LAWD you are brave to not only TAKE, but post those pics! I am going to be joining this little club post-TBD and once BFing is established. I am suddenly starting to pack on the pounds and I know they don’t magically melt away from me from prior experience. Mrrrrrrrp.

I did that calculator thing with my pre-pg weight, and apparently I am from North Korea (if my height is in feet) or Pakistan (if in cm). Ooooookaaaaaaaaay.

  4. Can I mention how shitty it is to read “if everyone in the world was like me it would add …… tons to the earth?” Brutal!

  5. I did the calculator with my pre-pregnancy weight and am apparently most likely from Sweden…sounds good to me! I am considering continuing with the WWW to try and help me to gain a healthy amount of weight with this pregnancy and not too much, like last time!
THe holidays are such a hard time to stay healthy – so many temptations! I LOVE cheese – I think it would kill me to take it off of my diet plan entirely! That and bread…yum.
You are such an inspiration – I would never had have the nerve to post my weight if you didn’t have the WWW going on, so thanks!

    1. I totally did it through my pregnancy, and I think it REALLY helped to keep me accountable and only gain 25#!

I think that by making the changes you said above you will do great! it is so so hard to make the time to eat really well and exercise. You just have to give yourself some “rules” to help. The DVR one would really make it work for me. I LOVE TV but NEVER watch it.

  7. I was exactly where you are. 26BMI. Skinnier than most americans. Fatter than everyone else. Sigh.

  8. I understand why you’re annoyed with yourself. I felt the same way after falling off the paleo lifestyle.

I LOVE your plan of no blogging until after exercise. I may borrow that from you!

I understand your feelings, but I do think you still look great!

  9. Go get em girl! 🙂 Stick with it! Keep venting as you need to, that’s what we’re here for!

  10. I threw away my Express dress pants long ago. And I haven’t had a baby!

  11. I indulged BIG time during the whole month of December and it shows!!! I have got big plans too, I finally weighed myself today and it wasn’t good. I weighed 151, I was 137 before I got pregnant and typically I am 132. I am only 5’5″. When I went back to work I went to Goodwill and bought some “new” pants, I refused to buy new larger sizes. We can do it!!!! Good Luck, oh and I hope all goes well with TTC again!!!!

  12. YOU CAN DO THIS. I know you can. You were doing great with losing weight before you got pregnant with Stella, you’ve got this! Sounds like a good plan to start with. I need to get my body moving more too – I’ve taken to chatting on the phone with friends while I”m on the elliptical. Multitasking!

  13. The holidays are TOUGH TOUGH TOUGH!!! I was doing really well until they hit and then I gained 7 pounds. How is that even possible to gain 7 lbs in 2 weeks?! I don’t know but it is. (Drink a TON and eat basically every waking minute). So I am feeling you right now. But with the holidays behind us, it is time to get in shape and it sounds like you have an awesome plan to do so. I am absolutely rooting for you and know you’ll drop those lbs in no time if you stick to your mission. I am going to try to get back to this WWW with some new goals next week! 🙂 Good luck to you!!!

    1. Haha – I love you Fiona! I’m the same as you – I stepped on the scale New Year’s day and saw 171# – Holy SHIT. Drinking non-stop and eating holiday foods for a few weeks will jack with you for sure. Trying to get back into a healthy routine here. Eek!

  14. You’ve still got a month! You can do this! 🙂

I want to do mfp but I’m worried about doing it while breast feeding, so I think I’ll wait. Few months and see how much I lose just bf.

I think I have those slacks! I have so many from limited express from the early 2000 and yes I still wear them too. 🙂

    1. Yeah, I didn’t do much of this while breastfeeding (which worked for me for awhile, until I started indulging more than necessary – oops!).

I’m glad I’m not the only one wearing my dress pants from 2001!

  15. You still look pretty good lady! I can’t fit into anything express anymore..i barely fit in them in HS when I worked out constantly. They just aren’t for a girl with hips.

I totally get your frustration. It’s so hard to get and stay motivated in the winter months, IMO. Good luck sticking to your goals and getting down a few pounds. I have lost about 7 in a month just by altering my diet. It is tough to kick the boos, for sure, especially when you’ve been denied them for so long after pregnancy and breastfeeding.

    good luck!

    1. It’s usually EASIER for me in the winter b/c there aren’t so many BBQs and drinking events for me to get distracted by. 🙂 My food/drink is better in the winter, my exercise is better in the summer.

  16. I love your goals. They sound really doable and like they’ll be really effective. I’m struggling to keep my weight down as well. Nursing was the magic bullet. At one point, I weighed less than I weighed in college!!! But since starting the weaning process a few weeks ago, I’ve gained eight pounds (I’m only five feet tall so that’s a lot). I haven’t even weighed myself lately because I’m so engorged that each breast must weigh about ten pounds. (-: Anyways, go girl. You got this.

    1. Ya, when I cut back on nursing to 2x/day from 4x/day is when the pounds started to pile on. Crap, I had never made that connection!! We’re still doing 2x/day and I’ve had no engorgement issues though, so I’m hoping that it can be a slow progression to nothing to I can avoid that part!

I have the same decade pants too- the zipper tore up so I had it repaired and it’s a slightly different color. Sad, but sounds like we have certainly got our money’s worth! I know I weighed my most with a sitting all day job…well and also when I was constantly on fertility meds. It sounds like you have a goal and a plan and I have no doubt you are on your way to meeting those goals! You can do it!

  18. I had those pants and I wore the shit out of them!! I think I might have bought them for my first real interviews towards the end of college. Wow. Memories.

I, again, so admire you for being so forthcoming about this. I’m not sick of hearing about it at all, although I wish you’d stop posting because you’d reached your goals of course!! I think your goals sound totally doable and I’ll be cheering you on.

Also, I got Ireland. So, yeah. Lots of beer and cheese! 😉

    1. Haha, I think that’s exactly why I bought them in the early 2000s – job interviews! I have a pair of plain black ones too, and they’re literally the only two dress pants I wear still.

  19. You can do it! Good luck!
I gained some weight after stopping breastfeeding, too…I was so close to (1 lb away from) my post-baby goal and now I’m a little ways away. I’m trying my first juice cleanse ever starting monday to try and jump-start getting rid of the last of the baby weight…I mentioned that I was thinking about it jokingly to my husband and he told me I couldn’t do it so now I have to, right? 🙂
