My toilets are cleaner than they’ve been in 2 years…

**Warning – this is going to be a post full of me whining and feeling generally sorry for myself. Capisce?**

So that’s how that’s going.

I literally had to leave work this morning and run home to (1) puke in my freshly cleaned toilet, and (2) change my shirt because I couldn’t stand the feel of it on the skin of my neck and needed it off. Fun.

I am seriously afraid you guys. Starting on Sunday (5w4d – so a full week earlier than with Stella) I have steadily been going downhill and feeling worse and worse. I’m at the point now of feeling nauseous 24/7 and being barely able to crawl out of bed or carry my toddler down the stairs. It is not good. Last night I had to crawl into bed myself at 7pm while Charlie put Stella to bed and cleaned up the kitchen after dinner because I just couldn’t stand trying to do a single solitary thing for another minute. I literally called my Mom crying because I didn’t know what else to do. If it gets as bad as last time (puking 5x/day, all day, every day)… I shudder to imagine how the hell I’ll handle it. I’m already considering telling my boss and co-workers WAY earlier than planned, because I’m just not sure how to hide how I’m feeling. Stella was puking all day Tuesday while I stayed home with her (poor thing) so I’ve been blaming my peakedness on her for the time being, but that excuse won’t work for much longer.

In the meantime, I’ve been scouring my blog for ideas from last time that helps. Zofran (I texted my midwife this morning begging for an Rx – hoping to get it today), peppermint hard candies, pre-packed fruit cups in sugar water, and ginger chews & tea. That’s all I can come up with. Any other ideas? What worked for you?

Oh, and a quick tip – don’t tell someone suffering from debilitating all day morning sickness (or especially HG – I cannot even imagine the depths of the hell those people are feeling): “it’s the sign of a healthy pregnancy!” Fuck that shit. I have lots of friends who had super healthy pregnancies and not a minute of morning sickness.

And no, Mom, I’m not mad at you for saying that. I know you’d take this from me in a heartbeat if you could. xoxo

Oh balls Josey! I am so sorry this is happening *again*! Taking care of another child is AWFUL when all you want to do it vomit all over and die. I am also sorry to say that I don’t have any advice for you. Your office seems to be really really great from what you have shared on your blog. Hopefully everyone is very understanding about what is going on when you tell them. Maybe be straight up is the way to go with them. They will hopefully try to help you out how they can. REST REST REST when needed and take help from other too! I know it is hard but you have to do what is best for you and that new babe. I will be thinking of you!

I don’t think I said it was the sign of a healthy pregnancy, though I understand that you took it that way. At least what I meant is that I would be comforted knowing this happened with Stella too, so interpret it to mean you’ll end up 32+ weeks from now with another healthy baby. I admit, it’s a bit of a stretch looking for a silver lining! Being sick every day all day is beyond miserable. Those of us who are trying to comfort you are struggling to find anything to say to or do to make it better, and of course we really can’t. So as is often the case, it’s better to just listen without offering useless platitudes! And yes, I wish I could take this from you. If wishes were horses, beggars would ride!
    xxlove you

  3. Oh you poor thing! How awful. I wish I lived in your town so I could come over and rub your back and feed you ice chips. And also distract Stella so you could SLEEP. I hope this morning sickness doesn’t last long… fingers crossed. I wouldn’t wish it on anyone, healthy pregnancy or not. xoxoxo

  4. Oh crap, again? I can’t imagine morning sickness while taking care of a toddler. I think you should tell your office, I know all the reasons not to tell them, I just don’t think it’s worth holding out.

I never really felt sick, but when I felt off, I crammed my face with orange flavored tic-tacs. I also had candied ginger on hand, but never needed it. I hope that you find something that works for you.

  5. Damn! This sounds terrible! I have no suggestions as I got super lucky with Sofia but all of the things you mentioned sound like good ideas. Particularly the ginger chews, those always help me for regular upset stomach. And origins makes a ginger scented lotion that helps me just by the smell. Though that might be iffy for you…

  6. Boo! Like I said, I wish I could be your kickstand!

Have you ever tried the motion sickness bracelets from the drugstore? I asked my mum for you and that’s what she recommended. She also said to drink some pedialyte for your fluids!

    1. I totally forgot I had a set of those. Off to find them now.

  7. I had this long comment typed out and WordPress ate it. Boo!

So anyway, no advice but major commiseration and hugs for you!!

  8. I had bad morning sickness when pregnant with my daughter about 2 years ago, my girl is 10 weeks older than Stella, it lasted about 3 weeks and then I was fine the rest of the pregnancy. The only things that worked for me were eating apple slices, I found Fuji apples to be the most appealing, and then munching on saltines. Then I know its not considered super healthy, but I also found sipping on carbonated sodas helped quite a bit, I would open a can in the morning and then gradually just sip on it throughout the day. I wanted to try and avoid as much high fructose corn syrup as I could, so I found a natural soda that had cane sugar in it. Good luck! Hopefully you get to feeling better soon.

    1. Thanks Cat – sipping on a Sprite right now. Apples actually sound good – I’m going to pick some up after work tonight.

  9. I’m so sorry. I was so sick too, but not throwing up. It never eased up. I spent all nights and weekends in bed, and I woudn’t go anywhere near the kitchen. I would let my husband cook food. The ONLY think that worked for me was constantly sipping lemon water. Sometimes sparkling lemon water. Feel better hun! Oh, and eating constantly. Saltines and nilla wafers.

  10. Ugh, I’m a bit behind in my blog reading, you’re preggers????? So exciting! Sorry you’re feeling sick but that’s a great sign!

  11. As someone who is 16.5 weeks pregnant and still struggling with heaving and vomiting, I feel your pain. And I seriously lost track of how many people said, “well, that means it’s a healthy pregnancy.” Yah, the morning of my worst episode I read a story about a woman who was miscarrying and still having horrible morning sickness….so much for that theory. As for cures, I have found bubbles help. Anything carbonated. I’ve actually taken to adding sparkling water to flavored water because the bubbles help. I also used those ‘sea bands’ things and used acupuncture treatments to help. I’ve upped my protein intake in the morning by 100%, almost all my protein for the day before taking my meds. It seems to have helped. I’m actually proud of myself for not vomiting in the past 43 hours, and yes I’m keeping track. I hope you feel better soon…this is so much worse than with Raegan as I had such minimal experience. I’m really hoping if it started earlier with this pregnancy, maybe it will end sooner…So sorry, hon! And it’s perfectly ok to be whiny when you feel like shit….I don’t care what anyone else says.

    1. Sea bands! I have those from my first pregnancy. Off to find them now…

  12. Oh man, I remember that and do not envy you. Nausea is terrible and feeling all day is terrible and I just can’t imagine while chasing an 18 month old. You poor thing, I hope it gets better and fast.

The only thing that worked for me was Popsicles (those real fruit ones) and if I could manage it, carbs.

  13. [Insert curse word here] Dude, that sucks! Maybe it’s extra bad because you have the same bug as Stella and you’ll miraculously feel better in a few days?? Yeah, that’s probably wishful thinking but that doesn’t mean I have to stop wishing (and praying) that’s what will happen for you. 🙂

I’m one of those annoying people who didn’t get sick when pregnant so I don’t have any suggestions for settling your stomach. If there’s another remedy I’m sure you’ll find it! You are the most resourceful mama I know (and not just in fake life over the internet)! Good luck!!

Zofran is like nectar from the gods. There were only a couple of times that my nausea was so bad that it didn’t work. Of course, the downside is that it tends to stop you up. So, if you can stomach it, lots of water and fiber!

Taking care of a toddler in early pregnancy is hell. It truly is. Especially the diapers…blech! I hope that you get a little relief soon!

  15. Ugh, I was hoping you’d be able to avoid the MS altogether this time! Even though I never got sick with either kid, the all day nauseous feeling still sucks. I can’t imagine dealing with what you are! And no, it’s not fun when you have a toddler at home to take care of – no getting around that, it’s just not. Lean on C as much as you can right now and let him help. And if it’s that bad, I think you may have to go ahead and tell a couple people at work just so they will cut you some slack when you start to feel shitty. Sorry girl, wish I had better suggestions for you, but the ones you mentioned are about all I know of since I haven’t dealt with it firsthand.

  16. I am so sorry you are so sick. I don’t really have any new suggestions for how to settle your stomach, the only thing that helped me were carbs…not the best thing health wise but that was all I could handle. Thinking of you!

A bit off-topic, and I haven’t read the comments yet, but I’m not surprised Stella threw up this week. Shannon, Hilary, and I ALL had puking kids this week! That’s almost every single blog I read!

  18. I hated the whole if you have MS its healthy because I had none so I kept waiting to miscarry. Some do some don’t 🙁 no advice just fluids! Keep them up and a hug!

I feel so bad I have not commented on your wonderful news!!! Congrats on being pregnant!!! I must say I am super jealous! Hope you feel better soon! I tried the ginger chewing gum and that helped. Your morning sickness though sounds pretty bad.

  20. I feel you on the puking kid thing, Sheelah is right, it’s a blog world trend! I can in no way imagine your own nausea and puking though. That sounds so so horrible, I’m sorry!! I didn’t have it too bad when I was pg but I found that Tostitos really helped. Sort of like Saltines but better! I hope it eases for you soon!

  21. Uggg man oh man I wish I had some good tips and advice for you but I’ve got nothing. The only things I have heard of are all ones you are already trying. I was one of the lucky ones to avoid MS almost entirely, so I can’t even imagine going through it.. and 24/7… nooooo. I am really hoping it starts to settle soon. I feel so awful for you and so sorry you are dealing with this. I know nothing else I can say will help but thinking of you!! 🙁

  22. Zofran, zofran, zofran! The only thing that worked for me. But then you’ll need colace, colace, colace! And the occasional dose of milk of magnesia… Yep, I lived on those three for the first 18 weeks or so of this pregnancy… It wasn’t natural, but it allowed me to both work and take care of Alex!

Not sure if this will work for the morning sickness, but I found something called Preggy Pop Drops to really help a lot with the nausea I had when pregnant with my son…they are citrus flavored. I also tried to make sure I was eating consistently….mostly bread and crackers in small amounts at a time. Hang in there…so not the fun part of pregnancy 🙁

Doxy 6 (sp?) ? My midwife prescribed it for me and they had to compound it at a pharmacy here. It is something like Benadryl and vitamin b6 combined and helps w nausea. It made me too sleepy to have any time but at night however it seemed to keep my early am nausea down. My midwife also swore that the key to morning sickness relief is a lot of protein – but it always sounded horrible to me. All I wanted was fruit and carbs. 🙁

    1. It’s half a unisom tablet (doxylamine) and vitamin B6 at least 75 mg a day that we’d compound or just recommend you take. A new prescription version of that will be available in the US soon, but if you don’t have amazing prescription coverage, not worth it. You can also eat chickpeas (I got mine through hummus) as they’re high in B6, along with lots of other foods like fish that’s safe in pregnancy. I hope you feel better soon!

  26. So sorry Josey. I was nauseous 24/7 for several weeks with this pregnancy, and even though I wasn’t vomiting, it was awful. I feel your pain. Trying to take care of a toddler, while feeling, sick, exhausted and miserable 99% of the time, just takes every last bit of your strength. All I can say is eat whatever you can (screw the nutritional/calorie content, you’ll make up for it in the 2nd and 3rd trimesters), try to get lots of fresh air (it usually helps a little), rest whenever possible (let hubby pick up the slack of housework, cooking etc. – it’s just for a short while, and whatever he is taking on as extra work it still doesn’t compare to what you are taking on physically and mentally) and try sucking on those Preggie Pops. They are basically just large sucking candies, but I found that I felt a little better so long as one was in my mouth at all times. Oh, and be nice to yourself. You aren’t superhuman.

Josey – I just dropped a container of those Preggie Pops in the mail yesterday (Augusta had bought them for you when you were pregnant with Stella, and never got them mailed.) They are supposed to arrive Monday at your post office box. I hope they work. Or at least help.

  27. Oh no! So sorry you’re feeling so miserable. I sure hope that things improve soon. Looks like there are a lot of good tips above. Hope something helps.

  28. I am so sorry you have all day sickness again as I know it is so hard to be so sick while taking care of a toddler!

I have 3 kids and have had 2 losses. I will say I think it is a myth also that MS always means a good outcome but with both my early losses I did not have it, I think my HCG wasn’t high enough and it was early on. With my 3 children now I was sick with every single one 6-18 wks (started feeling like crap at 5 wks) and took Zofran, Phenergan, B6 and Unisom and was hospitalized a few times for IV fluids and meds and lost 5-10 lbs each time (and my docs were not loving that as I am on the small side to start.)

Anyway, I think you know that little things may help but ultimately only with time it will go away. The meds took the edge off for me but I was still nauseous and still vomiting a few times a day. Things that DID help were peppermints or cinnamon Altoids, sour candies, sparkling water, frozen lemonade, small bites of saltines or graham crackers. I had boy, girl, boy and I was sick the same amount with all 3, I think it is just our bodies. My mom was the same with all 4 of us. Their is actually a new studying pinpointing genes related to MS and if your mom has it and your sister you have a very high chance of having it (my poor sister lol!) I have a few friends who never were sick at ALL, or who had a few days of nausea and their babies are totally fine!

Sorry for rambling but I totally get it and I pray this time it goes away sooner.

  29. There *

Sorry for the typos typing from my phone!

  30. And conversely, I barfed a lot and still had a miscarriage, so yeah, that wives tale can suck it! I hope you’re feeling better soon!!!!

  31. Heyyyyy!!! Ok, first of all, CONGRATS on baby #2!!! That’s SO exciting 🙂 Second, I’m so sorry you are so sick 🙁 Ugh, I was really sick with Z too 🙁 I hope this passes soon for you.. I’m back to blogging again, so I can’t wait to follow this pregnancy like I did with Stella 🙂
