V-Day: 24 Weeks

24wThis is such an odd milestone of a date to think of celebrating. One one hand, thanks (?) to the ALI community, I’ve been introduced to people who have given birth to preemies and micro-preemies who lived, and reaching this elusive “viability date” means that the baby in my belly  would have a fighting chance of surviving outside my body.

That being said, HOLY HELL I do not want this kid to even think of coming out for another 13 weeks. I’m counting on having another 3-4 months of gestating under my belt by the time I hold him in my arms!

So that’s where I’m at today. YAY for viability day, but really, it’s just another day, and I’m going to pray I get at least another 91 days of feeling this baby kicking away inside of me.

  1. Yeah – viability is such a tricky thing. I have a friend from my old job whose baby was born at 25 weeks and is alive and well, but what a nightmare they went through. It’s a tough thing to watch – I can’t imagine living it. When you think of what all happens in the womb between now and delivery, it’s unbelievable that modern medicine can save these micro preemies.

I hope you have another 3-4 months of pregnancy ahead of you! I’m sure you do! But it sure is nice knowing that they’d try to save the baby now, isn’t it?

  2. Yay! I feel like this is such a big milestone, but I hope the little one sits tight a while longer 🙂

  3. 13 weeks left makes it sound SO SOON. 13 weeks is like tomorrow. Holy hell! You’re going to have a BABY 🙂

    1. Yah, I thought the same thing. Holy hell – I met Stella 98 days from now. EEK!

  4. Wow! Congrats, what a huge milestone. 4 more weeks till v day for me!

  5. Being a NICU nurse, viability is something I was well aware of before ALI. And let me tell you how weird it is to feel my little one kicking from the inside at 24 weeks pregnant while handling a 1 pound 24 weeker. Now, I take care of those little ones and realize my kid is 5-7 times bigger than they are. HOLY CRAP! So bizarre.

Also as a NICU nurse, I know the struggle families go through with a preemie and micro preemie in the NICU. I’ve seen it all happen. It’s scary as hell. Sometimes I wish I had gone to nursing school after having my kids. OOPS….A little late for that, huh? My mind has set viablity at 34 weeks because I know there is usually minimal interventions needed when they reach this age. So yeah, viability is tricky but it does allow for a bit of easier breathing. Congrats on reaching 24 weeks and here’s to at least another 13 more!

Um of course that means for me I could be holding my little man any time between now and Halloween…and if this were with Raegan, I would be holding her in three weeks 1 day OMG!!!

  6. You look fantastic! I love your hair! 🙂 Happy Viability Date! A milestone worth noting for sure.

  7. Woohoo! Big day. But don’t get any ideas baby boy…stay nice and cozy in there!

  8. Yay for viability!

  9. Yep, definitely a trick thing for exactly the reasons you stated. Congratulations on making it here nonetheless. Eek, as said in comments above, 13 weeks sounds sooo soon!!! Baby will be here before you know it.

  10. You look great!! Every day is a bit of a milestone in a way… pregnancy is such a weird, amazing, incomprehensible process. Keep cookin’ baby! 😉

  11. First of, you look fabulous!!

Second off, it’s amazing to think that babies are born and survive at this point. It doesn’t seem possible, but it’s amazing.

Third, I agree that it’s a strange milestone, but it definitely is one, so congrats on getting here. And let’s go for another 13! (I just checked my calendar and it’s week 38 of the year, so we’d prefer the babe be born in the next 14 weeks, right?)

    1. They say 37-42 weeks is full term, so that’s what i was going by. S was born at 38w weighing 8#2oz, and that seemed like as good a time as any to me. 🙂

      1. I was thinking calendar year and all… 😉

      2. Ha! Ya, the tax write off would be nice. 😉
