Weekly Wednesday Weigh-In: 1 Month Postpartum

FYI, for those of you who would rather read about my cute kid’s 1 month weight check instead of mine, you can read it over here. 🙂

*****

I had an entire post written up for this a few days ago, but I ended up pretty much scrapping it and starting over this morning because I totally changed my goals for the next month once I thought about it some more. I’ll be back at work in 26 days, so it’s only going to get harder to find time to make healthy eating & exercise a part of my life style again. This means I really want to make a push now to get back in the habit of healthy living!

GOAL WEIGHT: 150# (I’m 5’8″ – medium build), BMI of 22.8
GOAL CLOTHING SIZES: Size 8 jeans, Size Medium shirts

Pre-pregnancy weight: 161#
Delivery weight: 181#
3 days postpartum: 166.5#
1 month postpartum: 163.9#, Body fat – 35.4% (normal is 26%-32%), BMI 24.9 (normal is 18.5-24.9)

I dipped as low as 161.3# at 10 days postpartum, but 164-166# is mostly what my weight is hanging out around since then. Beyond that, my body fat percentage is ridiculously high (and has been for a long time – like years, way before I could blame my belly fat on my kids), and I really want to work on increasing the muscle and reducing the fat in my body. That will make it easier for me to maintain a healthy weight since my resting metabolism will be higher if I’m more muscular. It will also help all of my clothing fit better since I tend to carry the majority of my extra fat in my belly region – especially postpartum (of course!).

Holy shit I look tired in these photos. Harvey did NOT sleep much last night. :\

Big goal for the next month – TONING.

Yes, I’d like to see the number on the scale continue to drop, but I don’t want to focus too much on weight loss yet because I don’t want it to impact my milk supply.

Specific Goals for the next month:

  • Complete Jillian Michael’s 30 Day Shred program. It’s only 22 minutes per day, and it’s a great way to jump start both cardio ability and toning in the body. I’m hoping it’s a short enough workout that I can’t make any excuses for why I can’t complete it each day! It’s also all done in my living room, which is nice because it’s been cold as hell here in Colorado lately so walks have not been happening very often.
  • Track calories in MFP & stay within my limit. I have my FitBit to track my activity level and it is synced with MyFitnessPal where I will track my calories. I have negative adjustments enabled, which means if I just sit around all day, I’ll get less calories — but if I’m working out, I’ll earn more calories. I have my settings set to lose 0.5# per week, which allows for 1,600 calories based on my age, height, weight, and average activity level. Because I’m breastfeeding I’m going to add 300 calories to that, so I’ll actually start out the day with 1,900 calories allowed. I’m also going to work on getting quality calories in my body instead of living on bread & cheese like I have been for the past month. 🙂
  • Drink more water – at least 100 oz per day. I’ve been failing miserably at this, and the dehydration makes my milk supply drop and makes me think I’m hungry when I’m not. Must drink more!

I really want to get fit & healthy this year by doing an entire lifestyle change. Who is with me?! 🙂

  1. OMG you are so dedicated. I did that JM 30-day shred once for a few weeks, and it was hard! And that was before I had any babies, let alone one within the past month like you. We both know you are far, far better at all this than I am though; so go kick some ass!

    1. Ha. I just completed day 1. A 22 minute workout took me 1 hour thanks to the baby waking up and needing to nurse and Stella throwing a fit from her crib & needing to go potty. Hm. This will be interesting.

Also – that workout kicked my ass. I used to do it no problem! EEK! Sad to see how far I’ve fallen.

  2. Good luck with your goals, they sound pretty realistic! Good luck with JM! I’ve heard her workouts (even the shorter ones) are NO JOKE!

    1. Ya, I used to do this DVD all the time, but it’s been years now. I just completed Day 1 and it about killed me. EEK!

      1. It’s always hardest at first, you’ll get into the swing of things though!

  3. I’m so jealous you’re at this point! I can’t wait until I can start working on getting my pre- babies body back! Still have six weeks until my due date though, so it’ll be a little while before I start. I’ll be doing weight watchers most likely, because they have a plan for nursing moms and it worked well to help lose weight after I had my daughter. And I really enjoyed doing Wii fit. A little went a long way I found 🙂
    Good luck!

    1. Thanks C! I’m definitely happy to be able to work on getting fit again. I’m sure you’ll do great once it’s time to get at it!

  4. I love my fit bit that I got fit Christmas! I’ve also been working on my lifestyle change through advocare and exercise. excited to follow along!

  5. I think you look pretty incredible, my friend. I was thinking of ordering that Jillian Michaels dvd for after to give me something short to do at home before it gets warm enough to run. We’ll see. I’m going to be in pretty terrible shape. We also have an old treadmill in the basement, and with all of this bed rest and with the whole c-section thing, I will probably have to start just by walking on that and maybe doing some light yoga or something.

But seriously. You look fabulous. And so so happy. 🙂

    1. 34w tomorrow and you’re still pregnant? Yay!!! Is it just routine to do a c/s in this situation now b/c of the placental flow concerns?

You DEFINITELY would not be able to jump into the 30 Day Shred post c/s for a long while. I had a magnificently easy recovery from this last delivery, and I was still seriously struggling yesterday. Walking and light yoga all the way for you, my friend. You’ll get back into shape though, I’m sure of it! All worth it for those little inmates of yours. 🙂

      1. Yes ma’am. Still pregnant and so very thankful. I’ve been working on an update, but it’s been, well.. difficult. Things are changing so much so frequently and my emotions are ALL OVER, so by the time I get something half written, it no longer seems to fit anymore with my mood or with the circumstances.

C-section because our Baby A is breech. 🙁 They would happily deliver them vaginally if she was head down, regardless of Baby B’s placental issues (or his position, as my doc is very comfortable with breech extraction). Prior to all of this much more serious stuff, I was very, very VERY disappointed. Before I learned it was twins, I tossed the idea of home birth around, so that should give you a picture of my mindset. But now I just don’t don’t care how they’re delivered. I just want them well.

        1. They don’t expect Baby A to turn I take it? Maybe she’ll surprise you! (I say that in complete ignorance of how common or uncommon it is for twins to move position this late) FX for you she does though. 🙂 But yes, I see how after everything you’ve been through the past couple of weeks it has shifted your focus!

Yep, it’s a BG newborn diaper – I love them! I was going to do an eBay or Craig’s List posting in the next week or so because he’s about out of them already actually. I could sell them to you instead though if you wanted? They fit from 6#-12# and my darn kiddo is already almost out of them after only 4 weeks of use since he was so big at birth and is growing so fast! Shoot me an email if you’re interested and want to talk colors/costs/etc details.

        2. Thanks for thinking of us! We already have our newborn stash on hand, actually. We decided to go the cheap route and do prefolds and covers for the newborn stage and then switch over to BG Elementals once they get too big. Those are the ones I’m dropping major bank on today. 😉

        3. Sounds good! I’m using the BG elementals and the Tots Bots AIOs for Harvey – so far liking them both, tho I like my old style Elementals better than the new ones I think.

      2. PS, is that a BG Newborn diaper Harvey is in? IT IS ADORABLE. I need to finish working on my stash!

  6. You are well on your way!! I ended up at 300 breastfeeding calries as the magic number after weeks of no progress at 500. You’ll be able to tell immediately if your supply drops, and boost it again. Diet and excercise didn’t make my supply drop at all, but I was drinking this tea and I noticed a huge drop and then I read the label and it said not for breast feeding moms! Arg! It was weight loss tea and it basically was super detoxifying so I was dehydrating. I was at target by the mothers milk too! Same brand and color packaging. As soon as I’m done breastfeeding I’m going to use that tea, it’s great for bloat!

Anyway I was able to fix my supply with nursing marathons, water and fenugreek.

You’re going to do great!! I néed to totally stop drinking as much wine an get down on the floor and do more stress reducing yoga, so I’m totally in board for making life changes here!!

    1. Yeah, I remember you saying 300 and I’ve read that it’s about 10 cals per ounce drank/pumped, and if I remember right Stella was around 30 oz/day, so I figured I’d start there and see how it went.

Is it bad that yesterday I had -300 from BFing and +336 from 3 Bud Lights? Oops. 🙂

  7. Wow! Good for you! I’m nowhere near as close to my prepregnancy weight! I read recently that breastfeeding moms lose the most weight between months 4 and 6. Apparently non-breast feeders lose it faster, but breastfeeders tend to lose more overall, just a bit later. This later but greater weight loss was true for me last time, as a colleague recently reminded me I told her after she has her baby. (Oh how quickly I forget.) Good for you for focusing on fitness–I’m trying to make a more serious effort (hence the fitbit) and I’ll be looking to you for inspiration. 🙂

Way to be on top of it all! I’m sure you’ll meet your fitness and weight goals handily. I’m like you, I hold onto weight in my belly even if everything else is small. Add in some abdominal separation, and I’m not feeling so great about my appearance these days. But, like mandski said, I did lose a lot of weight between 4-6 months and I felt crappy about my weight for months before then– so let’s hope this time things go the same way. And I’m excited to start running again once this freaking snowy winter finally goes away!

  9. Sounds like you have some great plans and goals! I think you are looking great already and impressed with the weight you have already lost. Wow, 30 day shred. Good luck!!! 🙂 You got this!
