Sick Days & Snow Days

Yesterday I got the dreaded call from school asking me to come pick up Stella in the nurse’s office because she was sick. That being said, we made it 2.5 months before the first pre-k crud hit our home, which I suppose is actually pretty good! 4 of the 14 kids got sent home yesterday with fevers and coughs, so it’s definitely moving through the class.

These are the days that it’s tough to be a parent who works outside the home. Yesterday our Nanny was amenable to watching the kids even though they’re sick (Harvey is a coughing, snotty mess as well), but today is normally my mother-in-law’s day to have them, and she asked us to stay home with them so she didn’t risk getting sick herself. I totally understand that, but it’s hard when Charlie is self-employed (thus no paid sick days) and I get a whopping 3 sick days a year, so they’re rationed out like gold coins in our house.

Fortunately (or not – Charlie makes more money than me so I’d rather he was at work!), we got about 18″ of snow in the past 36 hours, and it’s still coming down! That means no work for Charlie, so he was able to stay home with the kids today while I went into the office.

I guess that’s a win? Though I’d rather be snuggling on the couch in my PJs with the kids…

Walking into my office this morning – day 2 snow accumulations after day 1 had already been shoveled off!

  1. My breath catches any time I see the school pop up on my caller ID – ugh. Sorry they’re sick 🙁

As for all that snow? That shit is cray. And why are you only wearing a sweatshirt in it? Aren’t you freezing???

    1. Ha! I dunno. Not that cold out. 35 I guess? It’s still overcast & snowing, which actually keeps things warmer for now. Tomorrow morning will be FREEZING if it dawns clear, but then the sun will warm things up again. I think it’s supposed to be 50 and sunny by Friday!

  2. We have yet to keep Matthew home this year, but there was one morning that I swore he wasn’t going – and the thought of it made me so irritable. I was so lucky he woke up feeling better. It’s rough with sick kids, but especially for working parents. The 7 weeks I did work with Matthew in daycare, I had to take 3 days off because he was sick. Brian, because he made more than me and his clients need him (and we need his clients to buy shit), never had to take a day off for the sick kid. I’m glad you got to work all day! I was just about to ask you if you did your workout with me 😉

That snow looks spectacular… but I know it’s not fun to live with.

    1. Charlie was going nuts when I stopped home at lunch. All day alone with two sick, whiny kids is not his forte. 🙂

    Sorry for the pre-K crud.

  4. Oh my god I totally feel you. I just took T to the doctor today and they confirmed that he does, in fact, have hand, foot and mouth disease which means he has to be home ALL WEEK. FML. We are so lucky that my ILs are kind enough to take two of the days, (SO LUCKY!) but we’re still burning through three of ours. With two kids the chance of one being out seems to be more than double some how. Blerg.

I hope the kids feel better soon and that neither of you have to use more sick days.

    1. I totally think it more than doubles b/c they can pass it back and forth between each other! HFM is the worst 🙁

    2. I’ve been wondering if T was confirmed yet. That only took what, 4 weeks of daycare to catch it? Ugh!!! Horrid.

      Hang in there!

  5. It’s so crazy but everytime I see all that snow I get excited. It’s such a novelty for this little Australian gal.

    1. Come visit anytime 😉 We have some fantastic skiing & snowboarding!

I’m crossing my fingers that my daughter is getting all of the bugs right now at daycare and in a few years when she is in school her immune system is going to be great (ha ha). We haven’t had a sick day in a while (knock on wood) so hopefully that streak continues. Right now she just has a cold which isn’t fun for any of us because she likes to share…..
