The Monday Snapshot – Big Boy Undies Edition

Well, I wrote quite a bit about potty training Stella around the 14-17 month mark, but I haven’t said a word about Harvey. Unlike his big sis, he is not very verbal and also showed zero interest in using the toilet, so I have made very little effort to potty train him early, even though I had really hoped he would follow in Stella’s footsteps and be done with diapers sooner rather than later.

Over the past week or two, Harvey has suddenly started saying ALL SORTS of words. It’s really quite fun to see him finally hitting that language explosion stage! Included in those words were “poop” and “pee” – and last Saturday night he immediately ran up to me after pooping in his diaper exlaiming “poop!” and obviously wanting me to change him. Sunday morning I set him on the toilet to pee, just to see what would happen, and lo & behold, he did it. Hm…

I decided to throw some big boy undies on him to see what would happen, and he did great! He used the toilet multiple times (both #1 and #2) and was REALLY excited about the entire process – grinning & clapping for himself nonstop.

I’m under no delusions that diapers will be gone by Christmas, but a girl can hope, right?

  1. Oh my goodness. Those little boy undies are so cute! How exciting he’s shown such an interest all of a sudden and is actually going! Poppy asks to go a lot, but hasn’t actually done anything since a few times when she was much much much much younger. It seems like it’s right around the corner, but we’ll see.

  2. Funny! I woke up this morning thinking, “Friday we start. Yay.”. I have the CARS undies washed and ready to use as bait! I missed the window last December when he was going all the time on the toilet… Stupid me. I’m hoping we’re done by school start on Jan 4! Matthew did it in 2-3 days…. So….. It will take 10. Ha!

    Good luck!!!

Cute!! Good luck with the potty training. (Happy to be done with that!)

  4. wow you are certainly luckier than me! But I’m glad Harvey is doing so well so far!

  5. Yay Harvey. We missed our window at 22 months with Toby because we travelled at the crucial time. It took us a year of disinterest. When he decided it was all on. 3 weeks and no nappies at all (day or night). He was good in the day in about a week so christmas isn’t entirely out of reach. Good luck!

    1. Yeah, we are facing 10 hours of car travel on Wednesday. Gah! Hoping it doesn’t derail things. No issues today at all!

      1. You are so brave.

        1. Or crazy! 😉 people worry about flying, but I think it’s way easier!

  6. He is just way too cute in those little undies!!! Hope this is it for him! I have heard from several people that boys tend to potty train later so that may be part of it? I have no idea how true that is though! And that is actually still pretty early for average potty training age I’d say, right?? I am interested to see how Esme does. She is already showing interest like Lids did around this age (16 months) and likes to sit on the potty with her diaper on by her own choice and does say “poop” once she has already pooped in her diaper, so definitely some signs but don’t want to get my hopes up that it will be so smooth this time either. No diapers would be fun though! I love those cloth bums but any less laundry is a big plus!!!

    Good luck Harv!! 🙂

    1. Urban legend is that “boys are harder,” but there is absolutely no physical reason for that. I’ve read some research that says Moms tend to be the potty trainers and since they have different equipment they tend to be more hesitant to start the process. There’s no biological reason they should be “harder” or train later though!

Other countries babies tend to potty train by 1 year – diapers are expensive and a pain, and parents are more motivated to ditch the diapers. Americans often tend towards the 3 year old end of the spectrum. To each their own. 😉 I hope Esme is sooner rather than later!

  7. You’re so lucky with this!!! Lucy (2nd) is being rather difficult with the potty training! LOVES sitting on the potty but does nothing! Loves taking off her diaper after she goes and THEN sitting on the potty! Lol! Sometimes after a #2 diaper!! 😮
