Stitch Fix #13 – Birthday Edition

For this month’s Stitch Fix box, I told my stylist that it’s my birthday next week so I’d like some fun shirts to choose from and maybe a new purse. Well… hm. Mixed results. I can already tell you what I am keeping from this fix and not, so this will be more of a recap post for those of you who are interested. I actually like 4/5 of the items, but the prices were just too high for me this month, so I’m definitely going to ask my stylist to keep that more closely in mind in the future. Boo!

Level 99 – Blossom Flare Jean: $118
Splendid – Meda Tie Detail Dolman Sweater: $158

I actually pulled this outfit on and liked it immediately. The jeans fit great (though maybe a little short with shoes on), but I’m not a fan of the flare style really, so I immediately knew I’d be sending those back. Boot cut, straight leg, and (*gasp* who am i?) skinny jeans are more my jam lately. RETURNED.

The sweater was SUPER soft, I loved the color of it, and the tie detail on my right side was fun and a little different.  Then I looked at the price of the sweater and about choked. That’s a LOVE LOVE LOVE it price for me, and I just like/loved it. *sigh* RETURNED.

Street Level – Elisia Studded Satchel: $68

I haven’t bought a new purse in years. Like, probably 6 years? It’s sad. I always used hand-me-downs from my sister-in-law or just threw my stuff in the diaper bag. I’ve been thinking it was time to branch out though, and I actually totally love this purse! It’s a little wrinkly in this photo because I had just pulled it out of the box, but it’s super soft and roomy. I love that it zips shut (so nice when you’re shoving it under airline seats and such) and that it can be more of hand bag OR over the shoulder (also a positive when you’re traveling, especially when you’re with small children and need your hands free). It’s a mid-size bag, so I can throw my entire makeup kit and a book and sunglasses and such in there, but I don’t lose things in the bottom, which is a pet peeve of mine. KEPT!

Collective Cloth – Ryah Silk Peplum Blouse: $108

Um, hell no. NOPE NOPE NOPE. I hated everything about this shirt. The pattern, the cut, the style, the cost. Ew. Gross. Also, my hair looked like shit on Tuesday. Who knew? RETURNED.

Bella Dahl – Milania Button Down Top: $128

The last item in the box was this denim shirt. I saw it and just laughed because it instantly brought me back to high school when this look was cool in the 90s. DAMN. I guess it only takes 20 years for things to come back in style, huh? Also, how was I in high school 20 years ago????

At any rate, my stylist suggested pairing it with leggings and boots, so I did… and I actually liked it quite a bit. The detail on the end of the sleeves looks really neat in real life and it was a thin, soft type of denim. Not the most flattering shape on me necessarily, but it was comfortable and I thought the outfit looked cute. Cute is not worth $128 though, so back in the bag it went. RETURNED.

So there ya go. Not my favorite fix ever (partly because of style, but also party because of cost), but that’s okay. Like I always say, if I find one item I love enough to keep I’m happy, and getting to try things on in the comfort of my bedroom is always a perk. One year in and I’m still loving this service!

*****

As a quick recap, Stitch Fix is a stylist service for which you pay $20/box. The frequency of box shipments is up to you – (as often as every 2-3 weeks or on demand only), and if you keep any of the 5 items in each fix, your stylist fee goes towards the purchase price of what you keep. You give your stylist feedback on a form on their website and through Pinterest boards, blogging, etc. So far I think it’s a pretty awesome service. Some boxes have been better than others, but I like that it pushes me outside of my comfort zone to try new pieces on in the comfort of my own home, and anything I don’t like I can easily drop back in the mail in the included postage paid envelope. Pretty darn cool! My goal is to find one new piece I love with each fix, but if you love all 5 pieces, you get 25% off the entire box. The pieces aren’t as cheap as you’d find on a bargain website, but I do not have the patience to shop on sites / in stores like that. It is worth every penny to have it shipped to my home and I can try the items on while the kids run around being crazy. If you’d like to try it, please sign up through me and I’ll get a $25 referral fee. Thank you!

  1. Wow, those prices do seem crazy this month! Especially for that denim shirt because, although it looks cute and comfy, it looks like something you could get for way way cheaper. What a shame! I do really like that first sweater but I agree the price is too much. I agree on that ugly shirt haha… no way!!!! Oh and love the purse that you kept!

  2. What is she thinking with the prices? I don’t even spends that for live, love, love items!

Good decisions, but I’m sad for you about the pink sweater. I loved that too. I also loved the denim shirt, but I bought one for $88 (so stupid) that is super soft and fun…. And one at Gap for $40 that does the job.

I wonder if she sent splurge items since you mentioned your birthday? So weird that the prices were sooooooo off from usual!

I love the clothes Splendid makes, but they are simply too expensive, IMO.

FWIW, I would have made the same decisions you did this month. 🙂

  4. That peplum top is probably the ugliest shirt I’ve ever seen. Ew. It’s crazy that everything was over $100. I would be so annoyed!

  5. Damn! Not a good box! I don’t even particularly like the sweater – it’s just kind of plain. And for that price? No way! But the purse is CUTE! I love the color and I also love the long strap or shoulder strap option. More practical. Happy early birthday!

  6. Cute purse! The sweater and denim shirt look great too, but I feel ya on cost.

  7. $128 for a jean shirt? Maybe the prices were a birthday joke. Happy birthday!

That last outfit looks really great. You should look for a denim shirt at a better price. X

  9. Jesus that was an expensive box!!! The denim shirt could have been a bit more tailored as it hung on you a bit, have you given updated measurements? The colour of the sweater was nice but the rest of it. blah. How disappointing.

  10. That’s a bit of an interesting box. The patterned top was disgusting. I quite like the denim shirt but the cut really didn’t suit you. It looks like it doesn’t have cuffs as well. Def. an expensive box for nothing exciting. Have you ever looked at Uniqlo it’s a Japanese brand but they do some quite cool clothes. Some plain but interesting colours they also do some quirky stuff. Most of my jeans are from there and my most favourite light weight winter coat. Super warm but stuffs into my bag. They don’t post to NZ makes me sad so I only get to shop there when I am in Australia or the UK 🙁

  11. Denim shirt and leggings is pretty much my SAHM uniform. I resisted for a long time too…but it’ll get you!

I like the peplum shirt! *ducks*

Sweet bag! I recently bought myself something similar (except grey, because, grey) and now own TWO purses! Love that colour you got!

  12. Love the denim shirt, and the bag! Crazy prices. So glad you found a bag that works – I am still on the search (and coveting SRB’s bag).
