Painting Painting and More Painting

So this spring we got the harebrained idea to build the kids bunk beds ourselves instead of paying thousands to get the built-in queen over queen style that we wanted. Well, the bunks are about 90% done (pics & big reveal to come when they’re complete!) and while we did that, we converted the rest of the room to more of a big kid room. We took down the crib yesterday morning, and it’s like a little part of my soul left the room with it. No more babiez??? Say it ain’t so. *sigh* At any rate, I had a quart of teal paint laying around, and on a whim yesterday morning I painted one wall of their room with it in order to make it *slightly* less girly, and my 13 year old self who picked out that exact shade of teal carpet for my bedroom in 7th grade in 1995 is overjoyed with the result. 🙂

At the same time, we have also been painting the exterior of our house. We really wanted to do a dark stucco finish, but that was going to cost $20,000+, so that just isn’t in the cards right now. Instead we waited until Sherwin Williams did a 60% off spring sale and we bought $600 of paint and resolved to do it ourselves. The bid to have someone else to do it was $5,000 so it was a no-brainer to do it ourselves on the weekends, right?

Ha. Let’s put it this way – we haven’t killed each other yet!

We are changing the house from having light brown siding and half red / half green trim to having dark grey siding and all red trim, and let me tell you – it’s a PROCESS. It’s taking 2 coats to get proper coverage, and though I honestly kind of like painting, we are both pretty burnt out on it right now. We are probably 50% done with the painting but about 90% done mentally. Haha! At least we love how it’s looking against the stone we did last fall.

The biggest problem with all of the painting is what to do with the kids while we work! If we try to paint while they’re home, we are constantly running across scenes like this…

I climb, Mama!

So yeah, we are trying to work the majority of the time during naps and when my in-laws can take the kids. They took them Saturday night so that we could paint the ceiling of their room and the bunk beds, and then Sunday morning I painted the teal and finished the touch-ups in their room while the kids went kayaking with their grandparents. Lucky kiddos!

At the end of the day, the kids are overjoyed with their new beds and new room decor, but they really don’t care about the exterior color change at all. Go figure. 😉

The new outside color looks a thousand times better!!! Keep up the good work!

  2. Painting is a lot of work! Are you spraying or rolling the exterior? Good for you guys for tackling it yourselves though, and I’m sure your wallets thank you too! I can’t believe little Harvey up that high on the ladder! Oh my, haha!

    1. Hand painting – not rolling OR spraying. LOL.

  3. It looks great! Exterior and interior painting can be a much bigger project than homeowners ever imagine and they need therapy after! lol Those that tackle it successfully like you guy reap the benefits. Curious, would you hire a professional painting contractor if you had to do it all over again?
