Whole 30 – Day 4

Are you feeling puny today?

Those are the words that my coworker greeted me with at work this morning. Why yes, yes I am, thank you very much for noticing.

To be fair, I overslept this morning, thus my face is nearly bare of makeup and my hair is crazy, frizzy and air dried…but c’mon, really?

It’s Day 4 of my first #Whole30. I also crashed REALLY hard on my snowboard on closing day last weekend. Basically, every part of my body hurts and hates me right now, and I can’t tell if it’s from the sugar (and dairy, alcohol, grain, and legume) withdrawals, my high speed impact with hard packed snow two days ago, or both.

Can you tell I’m not skipping around with a smile on my face today?

But seriously. I need this. You can read more about the program here, but I really am excited to see what I’ll learn from this process. My dependence upon food and alcohol as coping mechanisms, my frustrating skin issues, my horrid seasonal allergies, the fertility issues we had in the past – all of these could easily be tied to the foods I’m eating. And I’m done. I’m ready. I’m excited. I’m terrified.

I’m not going to be blogging here about it every day, but I’ll try to keep this page updated so that I have it to look back on. I’m hoping that I love it so much that the #Whole30 can become something I come back to again and again whenever I need a reset. The creators of it are very clear that it shouldn’t be a #Whole365, but I do see the benefit in eating this way for a month (or few months) at a time to help reset your gut issues, immune system, metabolism, etc.

Wish me luck!

  1. Good for you! I’m on a different program, but clean eating is sooo good for you! I was actually in kind of a lot of pain the first week or so, and I really think it was the detoxing from sugar and caffeine. Hang in there! You’ll feel GREAT soon!

    1. Thanks for the encouragement!

  2. I read this first while eating dinner, all items on the No list. Best of luck on the journey! I clearly would never make it.

    1. Lol, it’s interesting to me to see what’s hard and what’s not. Tonight we are making spaghetti squash with a meat tomato sauce… which we actually love spaghetti squash, but it’s so much more time consuming after work to prep that and make sauce from scratch. It will be delicious though I’m sure!

I absolutely loved reading your update and your Whole30 page! I am going on 14 months of eating low carb and I really cannot say enough good things about it. I am down 71 pounds as of this morning and I feel great. I have not done Whole30 before, but will enjoy reading along as I think this would be an excellent option for me once I reach my next goal to switch it up a bit. 🙂

    1. I’ve eaten pretty low carb for 15 years, but this is entirely different. The focus isn’t on eliminating carbs per se, but eliminating sugar and grains definitely makes it more low carb (since my carbs are from sweet potatoes and fruits & veggies). I’m loving it. Also, I am SO SO SO SO proud of you – 71#?! That’s freakin’ fantastic Shannon!

  4. Good for you! I tried whole 30 but wasn’t committed. Brian wants to do it right now but he’s traveling each week and meals aren’t entirely in his control. I commend you for doing it and holy hell you make a good, healthy breakfast! Breakfast is not not thing…

You’re going to do well at this. You seem to really understand it, and I think that’s half the battle. ☺️

    1. I’ve eaten great, healthy breakfast for the past 10 years for sure. It’s my favorite meal of the day!

  5. It is transformative to truly eat without a bunch of man made shit in your food. It feels great!

    1. Maggie, I have to say that it’s like seeing a celebrity when I see you comment on my page. 😉 Love love love your writing always, even if I’m not always commenting. <3 And yes, I felt like I normally ate pretty clean, but this is eye opening as to how much shit I really was still consuming!

  6. I’m a believer! I sleep better, have better skin, am way less bloated on Whole30… and yet I can’t seem to keep eating that way after a round is over. Habits are hard! I think you’ll do great and I hope it helps you too!

    1. Very true that habits are hard. 🙂 You and Annette and Amy have me convinced to at least give this a shot though!

  7. So, what happened in Spain, stays in Spain?:)

    1. Haha, see my post from today!

Good luck! I know you’ll do great. You are incredibly determined when it comes to this stuff. I am eternally impressed. I know a few people who have done Whole30 who are total health nuts anyway, so I kinda just rolled my eyes, but my brother did it within the last year (last summer maybe?) and it was interesting to see someone somewhat “normal” go through with it. He did great!

    1. Haha, yeah, I consider myself to be “somewhat normal” for sure. 😉

  9. Good luck! I did my first Whole30 round recently (2/20 through 3/20), and the first few days were tough. But ultimately I felt great, and I am now on day 3 of my second round! 🙂

I made this from Skinny Taste the other day and it was amazing! http://www.skinnytaste.com/skillet-cauliflower-arroz-con-pollo/?utm_source=bloglovin.com&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+weightwatcherspointsrecipes+%28Skinnytaste%29

I doubled it to have leftovers and it has been great for lunches. I am sure excited to follow your progress. Cheese and beer would be my hardest things to give up for sure. I am still on the search for a healthy eating style that includes those two things in abundance 🙂

    1. Lol, aren’t we all? 🙂 I’ll check out that recipe – thanks!

  11. Starting my second Whole30 this Monday. This will be my 4th attempt…I keep failing…UGH!!!! I love reading other people’s journeys. I’m so glad I cam across your blog!!!!

    1. You’ve got this! I have a long history of failing at challenges, so I’m determined to follow through on this one for myself! 🙂

  12. Good for you! I caught up on your page and it sounds like you’re crushing it.

  13. Hope this is a really eye-opening experience for you! It helped me cut out some bad habits and my skin and sleep were seriously amazing while on whole30! hang in there!

    1. I so realize how often I use cheese *cough* every meal *cough* and to change some of those habits. Ha!
