So I just got a call from the elementary school letting me know that Harvey did NOT get into the preschool program in the fall.
Fuck. Fuckity fuck fuck fuck.
I live in a town of < 1000 people, and there is only one school in the town. It’s actually a fantastic public school (#1 in the state last year), and we’ve been really happy with it for Stella, but now I am most decidedly NOT happy. We were 100% counting on him getting into the pre-k program (which is for 3 & 4 year old kids in our district).
Priority was given to children of staffers, children with special needs, returning children (so the 4s who were 3s last year), the siblings of other students already enrolled in the school (this is Harv), and then new enrollees. When the front office person called me from the school, I literally started crying when she started off with, “I’m so sorry Josey, I know this is really not what you were hoping for, but…”
Yeah.
On the up side, he is #1 on the wait list, so I’m keeping my fingers crossed that someone moves or a parent decides not to put their kid in pre-k next year or something, because otherwise we are totally and completely fucked in the fall. Our nanny is done June 1st, we’ve hired a high school girl for the summer (who goes to college in the fall), and I cannot work from home full time with him in the fall. We also can’t afford for me NOT to work in the fall.

Harv and his buddy June hanging out this morning when I left for work. <3 I have loved watching the two of them get so close over the past 2 years since June was born (my BFF’s daughter – we nanny share), but dang-it I need this kid to be in school already!
I so understand the stress of figuring out childcare for a WAHM. I am sorry he didn’t get in- number 1 on wait list is so encouraging though, I feel like someone almost always drops out. Fingers crossed for you.
Number one on the wait list is encouraging: as you say, you only need ONE kid to not attend! Hoping that happens for you.
This post is very timely for me today because I was in line at 6:30 this morning to get my kids into the preferred summer camp program in our area. 🙂

He’s going to get in. If he’s #1 on the list, I have to believe that he’ll get in. If you were #3 or later, I’d be worried, but I think you’re going to be ok! Our public school runs it the same way and it makes me crazy! Bryson, if he repeats p-k, will hopefully go to the neighborhood public school for that after next year, and I’m already anxious for next February when we need to try to enroll. It’s a very stressful process, and I feel you.
Fingers and toes are crossed. Don’t stress yet (says the professional stresser).

It’s the only pre-k in town! $500/month, and totally worth it. I talked to the teacher today, and she is hopeful he will get in, but said the other 8 kids on the waiting list probably won’t. Crazy!
