The Backfire Effect

I just read this comic, and I feel profoundly changed. Go ahead, click over to it, read it until the end, and tell me you don’t feel the same. <3

  1. I’m helping lead a workshop on inclusivity in a week and we touch on a number of these issues brought up in this cartoon. There’s a lot of research on core beliefs and human reaction when those are challenged. It reminds me a lot of the Biology of addiction. Part of the big thing driving this is fear, but listening when core beliefs are challenged is also an exhausting exercise. It requires one to be mindful the entire time while also engaging in a form of empathetic curiosity that many are not trained to do (on an aside, that training is brutal). Add in that it needs to be a repetitive process and it comes easy to see why many don’t do this work, or at least do not do it without a lot of support and motivation.

  2. I love it. But my gut reaction is that the people who most need to hear this message wouldn’t even read to the end, let alone accept it.

    1. *sigh* SO true.

  3. I love this. Thank you for sharing.

I was so surprised to see so many people share this on my fb feed. Then, I saw you share it and thought, “Fine, I’ll read it.” 🙂 I’ve actually read a lot about this research before, so wasn’t surprised once I finally clicked, but I recently watched an old TED Talk about a similar-ish topic and think about it allll the time now. So, I know how you feel. Check out On Being Wrong; it’s from 2011, I think, but just Google the On Being Wrong TED Talk, and it’ll come up. The part about how it feels to be wrong towards the beginning is the part I think about all the time. My boss actually told me about that part months ago, and I didn’t actually watch it until last week, but I thought it was fantastic.

  5. Oh my gosh, I love that so much!!!!!!

  6. I keep coming back to this article. I finally just caved and shared it to facebook. Betting pool is now open to see who reads it all the way through and who proclaims it a bunch of BS. 😉
