KonMari-ing the Shit out of Things

I just sat down to write a quick update on the status of my closet, and when I was googling how to spell “KonMari-ing” this Tweet came up and made me laugh out loud!

Two weeks ago I wrote that my goal was to work on my clothes. Most of my house is pretty well organized and decluttered, but my closet has just gotten out of control, both because of fluctuations in my weight and because of sentimental attachment to items.

QUALITY over QUANTITY is my new mantra!

As I mentioned before, I started with the 6 drawers under my bed which held an assortment of items – baby clothes I’m saving to send to siblings, backups of Rodan+Fields items (let me know if you need anything from R+F, yes, I’m still selling it!), extra bed sheets, etc. I purged a few items (like our DVR box – why did I hold onto that again?) and organized others.

Then I went onto the dresser at the foot of our bed. It’s a 2×3 arrangment of drawers (IKEA Kullen FTW), and again, it’s a mix of stuff, which I’m sure Marie Kondo wouldn’t approve of at all. Ha! On the left, our DVD player + misc. tech stuff hides in one drawer, Charlie’s shorts in another, and our swimsuits in the bottom. I tossed a few ratty old suits that had no elasticity remaining, saved a few others that I don’t wear just to put in a “guest bin” downstairs by the hot tub, and threw a few of Charlie’s old shorts.

On the right, there is my bra drawer, shorts drawer, and workout pants/PJs drawer. I tossed a few pairs of shorts, but I realized I have 23(!) nice pairs of freakin shorts that are almost all 1-2 sizes too small for me. A friend gifted me most of them 2 years ago after she lost weight, but now I’m too big to wear them. Oops. However, I refuse to throw those out at this point when I’m refocused on my health and working on fitting into all of those come summer! I will reassess this on my first goal date of June 1st, but for now they are folded and organized and look sweet! I also tossed a bunch of crappy old workout gear & PJs and organized what remained. It feels good to be taking control of all of this again!

That’s my painting clothes on the front left. Everyone has those, right? 🙂

I still have a LOT to do in my closet, but I have gone through all of my layering & workout tank tops and did a first fast pass through the main clothes when I was packing for our Denver trip.

Next month I’m going to do the full purge where you take everything out and start from scratch, but I have good trash, donation, & sell piles started at this point!

  1. OMGoodness! That tweet is hilarious! I’ve been tackling our closet a little bit at a time since December. I can see the floor now which makes me so happy 🙂 We really need to do the full purge by taking everything out and putting it back in, but I don’t see it happening any time soon.

    1. Yeah, eventually I want to do that as well, but it feels good to be taking baby steps in the meantime!

  2. I’m the person that my friends call over to come help them go through their closets. I was Kon-Maring before it was a thing. It just feels so good when you are done! Way to go!

    1. Lol, me too. Seeing that episode a couple of weeks ago just reminded me that it was time to tackle my closet again 🙂
