RIP

I woke up this morning all set to do my WWW post. I didn’t lose, but I didn’t gain. Basically, I got what I deserved since I only tracked my food for half the days. It was an okay week.

Then…my Mom called. I hate when my Mom calls, because even though we talk nearly every day, the only time she calls me is when someone has died. I let myself hang onto hope for a second that she was calling to celebrate about the election, but then she opened the conversation with, “There’s been a tragedy here this morning.”

DAMMIT.

Those of you who were following me in the beginning three years ago might remember that we used to have two dogs. Chief was always Charlie’s dog and Kasey was always my dog.

Chief is a border collie / Australian shepherd that was a rescue dog. Our friends got him at 6w old, and when they broke up a few months later, we “inherited” him at about 6 months old. He’s neurotic, but he’s great. A couple of years later, I decided that Chief needed a friend, so I went down to the local humane society and came home with a four month old named Kasey. They told us Kasey was a border collie / rottweiler mix – kind of an odd mix, but he was the sweetest thing. They had named him Kasey Khane after the famous NASCAR driver b/c he was “quick to steal your heart.” The problem was that Kasey was a runner – that dog LOVED to run. He could also jump, so even though we had a fenced in yard, he could jump the fence and run. Not a great idea when you live in town!

Two years ago in October my parents came out to visit, and when they left, Kasey went home in the car with them. It was a hard decision, but they live on a huge farm in MN with plenty of room to roam, and Kasey spent the last two years without being on a leash once. He was in Heaven.

This morning he was accompanying my Mom’s cousin on a walk down the driveway, and one of the guys working on building my parent’s new house was coming up the road. Kasey was never the smartest dog when it came to vehicles, and apparently he ran in front of Don’s truck, and Don couldn’t avoid him.

Mom told me that they buried him this morning at the base of the oak tree next to my childhood dog, Poobie.

Cue the sobbing.

RIP Kasey Kahne. You were a good dog. (Dec 2008 – Nov 7, 2012)
